Updated | By Steve Bhengu
The commission of inquiry looking into the recent political killings in KZN has been given some insight into some of the underlying causes around this type of violence.

The Moerane Commission of Inquiry is today holding its first round of public hearings where experts are giving testimony.
Anthropologist and Peace Monitor, Mary de Haas has spent some time documenting violence in townships and hostels around KZN.
She's told the commission some of the triggers of violence is ethnic grouping which is prevalent in hostel dwellings.
Meanwhile, The commission's Advocate Marumo Moerane says it is not entirely up to them to see through the recommendations made during the sitting.
Journalists yesterday heard how the first phase, which is the collection of evidence, is complete, and that the next step is public hearings involving the affected public.

From there the team will put together its final report where it will make a number of recommendations.
"It is not our function to carry out those recommendations. We are hopeful that whatever recommendations we make will be taken seriously by the principals who have appointed us. They'll be studied and if they are found to be worthwhile, they will be followed up and put into effect.
"We are hoping and we believe that those who have tasked us to do this job are serious and they want us to assist them in implementing whatever recommendations that we'll come up with," he said.
