All women team take on inter-country elephant challenge
An all-women South African team will travel at least 10 000km by car through ten countries to broaden the focus on elephant conservation.
Lead by the founder of Blue Sky Society Trust - Carla Geyser, the Elephant Ignite Expedition will begin in Durban on Woman's Day next year.
Geyser says their objective is to increase awareness to the declining elephant crisis in Africa, whilst implementing a community drive and youth programme on the trip.
"We will be spending a lot of time with organisations on the ground, in their communities and going to schools to teach the importance of looking after the elephant and conserve one of the Big Five," she said.
Elephants are in as much danger as rhino as the poaching of these mammals directly feeds into illegal ivory trade.
According to Geyser, 60% of the elephant population have been poached in the last 10 years while the highest rates of elephant poaching have been recorded in central Africa.
The team will document the trip via a web series on Earth Touch. They will also share updates on social media.
