Albinos need better protection: SAMRC
Updated | By Nondumiso Zakwe
Specialist scientist in the Environment and Health Unit Caradee Wright has been speaking to Newswatch after the body of a 20-year-old woman was found in Manguzi in northern KwaZulu-Natal recently.
Thandazile Mpunzi had been missing for over a week when suspects led police to a shallow grave.
Wright says the persecution of people living with albinism and stigmas attached to the condition are prevalent across sub-Saharan Africa and other parts of the world.
''We need to change the views of people to understand that by having low melanin content - it doesn't make them any different on the inside from anybody else.
''But the other side is that we need to do a lot of anti-discrimination campaigns and we need to make sure that government provides the legal protection that people with albinism require,'' she said.
The four suspects arrested in connection with the murder will appear in the Manguzi Magistrates Court tomorrow.
Meanwhile, five albino children from Tanzania who were mutilated because they are albinos are getting relief in the United States.
