Agriculture officials urge owners to closely monitor pets

KwaZulu-Natal's agriculture officials are urging communities to look out for signs of the rabies virus in their pets.

The department says the virus is moving through the King Cetshwayo District as well as parts of the Ilembe District and Inanda in eThekwini.   


It has launched a drive to prevent rabies-related deaths in humans this week after a two-year-old boy died in Tongaat last month.

He was bitten by a neighbour's rabid dog.  


Agriculture's Khaye Nkwanyane says they have gotten a lot of responses.


"People are starting to identify certain behaviours in their dogs and they immediately contact us and our team immediately comes and vaccinates. This week, we have been running the vaccination campaign in that area and so far, we are happy with the turnout," he says.
