AG asks for intervention at uMkhanyakude municipality
Updated | By Tsakane Mhlongo
The Auditor-General has asked the MEC for the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs to intervene at the troubled uMkhanyakude District Municipality.

Thulasizwe Buthelezi says he met last week with Auditor-General Tsakani Maluleke, who raised concerns about ongoing financial mismanagement.
She warned that the municipality's failure to collect money owed by residents for years, could result in significant financial losses.
This comes days after Finance MEC Francois Rodgers withdrew Treasury support, citing a lack of cooperation from the municipality’s leadership.

Reports emerged on Friday that municipal workers did not receive their July salaries.
The department's spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila says Buthelezi will act on the Auditor-General’s request.
"The MEC holds the AG's office in [the] highest regard and is committed to acting in the interests of [the] residents of the district.
"The AG has requested a formal report from the MEC by 15 August and the MEC will abide by this deadline."
