AFU to seize vehicle used in cellphone battery tower theft
Updated | By Nondumiso Dube
The Asset Forfeiture Unit has been granted a preservation order to seize a vehicle believed to have been used during the theft of eight Huawei cellphone battery towers.
The batteries, said to weigh about 400kg, were stolen in Vryheid last May.
Three suspects, Thabile Nontobeko Mkhize, Alice Magona and Mathew Mapaila have been arrested in connection with the crime.
"The matter returns to the Vryheid Magistrates' Court on 17 May 2022 for a pre-trial conference," says National Prosecuting Authority's KZN spokesperson Natasha Kara.

"The vehicle will remain under the order until the AFU obtains a forfeiture order. The order was successfully obtained by Senior State Advocate Vika Ngqasa.
"This matter is indicative of the impact made by the AFU in the fight against organised crime, especially where there is the destruction of economic infrastructure."
