ACS welcomes approval to replace baggage scanners

Aviation Co-ordination Services has welcomed the South African Civil Aviation Authority's approval to replace four critical baggage screening units at OR Tambo and King Shaka airports.

The decision follows a legal battle between ACS, the aviation authority, and the South African Airports Company over who is responsible for hold baggage screening.

The High Court previously ruled in ACS’s favour, blocking ACSA from implementing its R3.15 billion in-sourcing plan.

It also ordered the Civil Aviation Authority to approve the equipment upgrade.

Aviation Co-ordination Services CEO Duke Phahla says they've begun installing the new screening units.

"We commend SACAA’s recognition of the urgency in replacing aged HBS equipment to ensure uninterrupted security operations at airports. We have always maintained that passenger safety and continuity must come first, and this step reflects that shared concern.

"While the legal process runs its course, our focus remains on ensuring uninterrupted, world-class baggage screening services for passengers and airlines. We remain committed to working cooperatively with ACSA, SACAA and all stakeholders to safeguard operational integrity and uphold aviation security standards."
