Accused in stabbing death of Durban woman sent for mental assessment

A Durban man accused of stabbing a woman to death, allegedly over her family's support for Palestine, has been sent for mental assessment.

Grayson James Beare appeared in the Durban Magistrate's Court on Tuesday morning, facing charges of murder and attempted murder.
Halima Hoosen-Preston was attacked in her home in Umbilo on Sunday, along with her husband and her son.

She died at the scene, while her husband and child were taken to hospital.
NPA KZN spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara says the 44-year-old Beare will be back in the dock next week.
"The matter was remanded to 11 June 2024 for bail investigation and for Beare to undergo mental assessment. The state is opposed to bail."
