Abandoned Umlazi newborn recovering in hospital

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Social Development
says no child deserves to be dumped like trash.
The comment was made after residents from Umlazi’s H-Section, south of Durban rescued a four-day-old baby from a pit latrine on Thursday afternoon.
The infant is currently receiving treatment in hospital.
Police have opened a case of child neglect and are searching for the mother.
Social Development’s Ncumisa Fandesi-Ndelu says it is disturbing to hear that there are still people who dump babies.
“There are so many options available to women. Contraceptives are free and after a baby is born you still have the option of putting the baby up for adoption or leaving the child in the care of family,” she said.
She says dumping a baby is a criminal offence.
