5 KZN officers nabbed for illegal issuing of learners' licences
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Five KwaZulu-Natal licensing officials are due to line up in the Durban Commercial Crimes Court today on charges of fraud and contravening the National Road Traffic Act.
The suspects - four of whom are examiners in Underberg - are accused of fraudulently issuing learners' licences after allegedly helping some applicants to pass their tests.
The four and a manager, said to be based in Howick, were arrested on Friday.
"It was tip-offs from members of the public as well as investigations," the Road Traffic Management Corporation's Simon Zwane said.
He says seven other officials also spent the weekend behind bars, following their arrest in Limpopo for allegedly issuing roadworthy certificates for vehicles they didn't physically inspect.
