5 killed, 4 hurt in horrific uThukela crash

KwaZulu-Natal police are probing a deadly accident in the uThukela District Municipality that claimed the lives of five people, including a baby.

Their SUV which had been travelling on the main road from Estcourt to Ntabamhlope plunged down an embankment late yesterday afternoon. 


The vehicle rolled about 30m before coming to a stop in the Zwelisha area.  


Robert Mckenzie, who is with KZN Emergency Medical Services says rescue teams had to carefully make their way down the steep embankment to pull the survivors from the vehicle.  


A baby girl, two men and two women died on scene.  


Four other people were treated for various injuries.


"Paramedics treated four patients who had survived the initial impact of the crash and stabilised them on scene before transporting them to hospital. The exact cause of the crash is not known at this stage," he said. 


Meanwhile, there's been a spate of accidents on our roads over the past 24 hours, many of them involving pedestrians.  


In Kloof, a man in his 40s died last night on the M13, near Everton Road, after he was hit by a car.


Netcare 911 paramedics arrived at the scene and found the man lying in the roadway.


Just before the Ballito off ramp, a woman who reportedly tried to cross the road was killed when a car slammed into her on the N2 northbound. 


Netcare 911 paramedics say the woman died on scene due to the extensive injuries she had sustained.


The damage of the vehicle suggests that is was a high-impact collision, the front and the bonnet were crumpled and the windscreen was shattered. 


Then on the M4 Durban bound, a man lost his life after he was knocked down by a car, just after the Quality Street Bridge last night. 


ER24 paramedics found the man believed to be in his late 20s early 30s lying in the fast lane.
