They were nabbed on Sunday on Woodhouse Road, not far from the Scottsville property where seven suspects were killed in a shootout with police last week.

Provincial police spokesperson Thembeka Mbele says they have been monitoring gang-related violence.

"The team pounced on unsuspecting males and four were placed under arrest. Each suspect was found in possession of illegal pistol with rounds of ammunition. They are aged between 18 and 30.

"The arrested suspects are linked to a string of murder cases that were committed in the Pietermaritzburg, Imbali, Richmond, Bergville as well as robbery, rape and assault with the purpose to inflict grievous bodily harm," says Mbele.

Police were placed on high alert ahead of the funeral, this past weekend, for Sphelele 'Ntsuntsu' Mkhize - an alleged gang mastermind.

A voice note, warning of mass hijackings in honour of Mkhize, who was also killed in Scottsville, had been widely shared on WhatsApp.
