22 KZN locations quarantined for foot and mouth disease

At least 22 locations in KwaZulu-Natal are under quarantine following an outbreak of foot and mouth disease in the province.
The national Department of Agriculture says provisions have been made to allow the early slaughter of animals from the affected feedlots.
Spokesperson Reggie Ngcobo says so far 165 permits have been granted for movement of animals into the disease's management area for direct slaughter.

"Livestock owners are encouraged to submit all applications for movement to provincial veterinary movement control officers for evaluations and risk assessment.
"Up till the 3rd of August, the following permits were issued: 139 permits for more than 11 000 pigs for slaughter and abattoir, 81 permits for more than 3 500 cattle for slaughter, 70 feedlots, 11 commercial farms and abattoirs inside the DMA area."
