Torrential rains, snow and strong winds battered parts of the province this week.

At least 49 people lost their lives in the OR Tambo District Municipality.

The organisation's Ali Sablay says they started receiving calls for help from the Butterworth community on Monday night.

"The people of Butterworth had a rude awakening as water washed their homes and, in some instances, washed the homes completely away. Our teams were immediately underground, and community halls opened up within seconds.

"Close to 2,000 people are currently being accommodated at three community halls in Butterworth. Gifted of the Givers saw to the immediate needs of the people on that day.

"They came soaking wet to the wall. We provided them immediately with hot meals, clean drinking water, warm clothing, and blankets."

Sablay says desperate pleas also came through from Mthatha.

" You could see the total destruction the impact, floods and the storm had on the vulnerable communities. People informed us how our mothers were clinging to their children, thinking that they had lost them at the severity and force of the water coming down.

"Gift of the Givers has teams on the ground busy with activation."
