19 suspects in Verulam mosque attack return to court

The 19 suspects arrested in connection with a deadly knife attack at a Verulam mosque, north of Durban, as well as a number of bomb scares in KwaZulu-Natal, are due to line up again in court today.

They were nabbed by the Hawks two weeks ago in connection with the murder of Abbas Essop at a mosque in Ottawa in May.

Days after the knife attack, a device was found under the chair of a Moulana in the Imam Hussain Mosque.

About six other devices were then planted in prominent areas in the city - causing panic.

The first one was discovered in Woolworths at The Pavilion while another was found inside the store's Gateway branch.

Hawks spokesperson, Hangwani Malaudzi says it is not known if the suspects will try to apply for bail today.

"Based on all the other bomb threats that were made and the devices that were also found in the Durban vicinity, this is part and parcel of that investigation. We are hoping that based on what we have uncovered so far, this is going to be a landmark case in the country."

Malaudzi says they believe they are all implicated.

"We are of the view that we have already arrested all suspects but at the same time, the investigations are still continuing."
