More than 19 people have been arrested during protests in some areas north of Durban apparently over the results of the recent elections.
Protesters have since this morning blockaded roads with rocks and burning tyres in Inanda and KwaMashu.
In Inanda, a metro officer was rushed to hospital after being shot in the mouth and right arm earlier this afternoon.
Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane says the situation was under control in the late afternoon with officers monitoring the area.
"We received complaints that there were a number of roads that were blocked stones as well as burning towers in the area. The police proceeded to the scene to monitor the situation. We have arrested more than 19 suspects for public violence that was reported in the area," he said.
