Spokesperson Vishnu Naidoo says the weapons need to be checked if they have been used to commit crimes before being destroyed.

"We have said from the onset that people handing in illegal and unwanted firearms can do so without the fear of prosecution. However, we have emphasised that if any of those firearms are found to have been used in the commission of any crimes, then the person handing in the firearm is likely to face prosecution for such a crime."

"The only part where people will be free of prosecution is if they hand in their firearm and if we find that those firearms have not been used in the commission of a crime," he said.
