Between 50 and 80 people gathered earlier at the Green Hub at Durban's Blue Lagoon.

They have since been broken up into groups of five to search the Umgeni River.

Scriven went missing on Monday. Her family believes she was swept away in strong floodwaters after her vehicle experienced mechanical problems in the Glen Anil area, north of Durban.

Marshall Security's Kyle van Reenen says search and rescue efforts are still ongoing.

"They'll be combing the areas of the riverbank, around the Blue Lagoon area as far up as they can walk. We also have a lot of jet skis, surf skis and paddle boats that have been generously lent to the search area.

"Members of the public as well as the lifesaving club will then be combing the river further up where we can't access on foot. The coordinated search with search and rescue members of the police will move down the river.

"The public's idea is to then move up the river and meet them at a central point," he said.
