Sam Smith is going back to their roots with a brand new single that is reminiscent of their earlier days in the music industry.

The English singer, who uses the pronouns they/them, released 'To Be Free' on Thursday along with the song's official music video.

"I wrote this song with my dear friend Simon Aldred," Smith said.

Smith wrote the song five years ago and has "been waiting for the right time" to release it.

"I couldn't be happier that it's finally yours," they said on YouTube

'To Be Free' is filled with powerful emotions and vocals touching heartstrings. Fans were literally in tears listening to the song.

"Pray your heart be lighter/ Brave and free like mine/ Floating like a feather/ Hope waits down the line," Smith said.

Many fans say the song reminds them of the music the singer released on his debut album, 'In the Lonely Hour'

The album featured tracks such as 'Stay With Me' and 'I'm Not the Only One'.

"This is the Sam we fell in love with," one YouTuber commented. An Instagram user said, "Good to have the old Sam back."

Smith says they have never had a recording experience like the one they had making 'To Be Free'.

"It’s one vocal and guitar take from start to finish – one live performance of me and my friend Simon Aldred in a pure state of music and expression," they said in a statement.

"I wrote it five years ago while writing my last album, 'Gloria,' and then parked it because I knew it was not a song for that album. It was created during a time in my life where I became free within myself."

Smith also praised the "incredible choir" featured on the project.

The 5x Grammy Award winner has not revealed whether the song is a standalone single or will appear on a new album.

However, fans expect more next music in 2025.
