Chappell Roan says hateful backlash makes her cry
Updated | By Music Reporter
"I didn’t realise I’d care so much."

While most celebrities try to brush off online hate or ignore it completely, Chappell Roan admits it sometimes makes her sad.
The 'Good Luck, Babe!' singer opened up about her feelings in the latest issue of Interview magazine.
She was interviewing fellow musician SZA for the cover.
Roan has had her fair share of hateful comments online. People have criticised her outfit choices, her looks and the things she says.
She recently got flak for saying her friends with young children are in hell when talking about whether she wanted to start a family.
"All my friends who have kids are in hell... I actually don’t know anyone who’s happy and has children at this age. I literally have not met anyone who has light in their eyes, anyone who has slept," she said on the 'Call Her Daddy' podcast in March.
Many moms took offence to her comments, with one TikTok user saying: "No hate to Chappell, but this is why I only complain to other moms.
Speaking to SZA, Roan - whose real name is Kayleigh Rose Amstutz - says she didn't care about the backlash until it got personal.
"I didn’t, until people started hating me for me and not for my art. When it’s not about my art anymore, it’s like, 'They hate me because I’m Kayleigh, not because they hate the songs that I make.' That’s when it changed," she said.
The 'Snooze' singer points out that her haters don’t know Kayleigh.
Roan agrees, but confesses that mean comments still hurt.
"Exactly. They don’t. But when things are taken out of context, people assume so much about you," the 27-year-old said.
"I didn’t realize I’d care so much. When it comes to my art, I’m like, 'B***h, you can think whatever you want. You are allowed to hate it with all your guts.' But when it comes to me and my personality, it’s like, 'Damn. Am I the most insufferable b***h of our generation?'"
It makes me cry. I don’t know if it will ever feel okay to hear someone say something really hateful about me.- Chappell Roan, Interview magazine (June 2025)
Elsewhere in the interview, SZA admits that she sometimes feels like the underdog.
"My curiosity outweighing my fear is the only thing that keeps me going. Even the stadium tour—I’ve never been on a f**king stadium tour before," she said.
"There’s so much fear. 'Am I going to feel the crowd so far away from me versus being in a smaller venue? There’s no top on the venue, so where’s the energy going to bounce off of? Am I going to be able to catch it and release it and flip it? I’m too curious about what it’s going to be like to go up in that harness and too curious about what it’s going to be like to really give my best Tina Turner impression. I just have to follow the thread.' For real, for real."
