With the voting process for the 2016 Local Government Elections now a thing of the past, the IEC's focus is on counting and capturing results.

Electoral officers have confirmed that counting got underway at all voting stations last night.

A KZN resident says she is hopeful the successful candidates will use their positions to serve their communities.

"Parties should have less talk and more action and become less selfish and more selfless. May whichever party wins serve the [needs] of the people," she said.

Meanwhile, the IEC in KZN says there were still about 200 polling stations open at around 8 last night.

Provincial electoral officer, Mawethu Mosery says the affected areas were mainly in Inanda, KwaMashu and Glebelands Hostel in Umlazi.

Other areas were also affected by power outages due to severe wind conditions.

Mosery says in some areas up to 1 000 people were still waiting to vote by the time stations closed.

"After they counted at the voting station they will bring it to the local office for capturing. The count at the voting station is in three parts so that's why it takes longer to count at the voting station," he said.

Data on the IEC's official website suggests a little over 54% of the ballots counted so far in KZN have gone to the ANC.

The IFP has 27% of the counted votes and the DA 11%.

No data is available for eThekwini as of yet.
