Updated | By Lucky Khanyile
A security guard is recovering in hospital after he was severely assaulted this week - allegedly by striking workers and students at the University of Zululand.

It is understood that the protesting group clashed with security guards on Thursday - leading to the assault.
The police's Thulani Zwane says the guard had to be taken to hospital.
"The security guard was taken to hospital for treatment. We have opened a case of public violence and of assault as the security guard was assaulted," he said.
The guard remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital.
Zwane says no arrests have yet been made, and an investigation is ongoing.
