It is believed early last night the group stormed into a house in the area, armed with guns and a pick-axe, demanding cash and other items from the family.

The homeowner, who is said to be a South African National Defence Force member managed to reach for his gun, and fired at the suspects, who also fired back.

One of the suspects was fatally wounded. The man's wife was also hurt by one of the gunshots, but is recovering.

The police's Thulani Zwane says no arrests have been made.

"The suspects fled the scene in their own getaway vehicle which was a Mercedez Benz. It was parked outside the yard. A case of murder as well as house robbery was then opened as well as an inquest at the Sydenham Police Station for further investigation.

"The suspects who fled the scene are still at large. No arrests have been made," he said.
