St Augustine’s Hospital launches probe into lost kidney
A number of staff members at St Augustine’s Hospital in Durban will have an internal probe instituted against them after a patient's kidney went missing following a surgical procedure.
Cancer patient Prakasim Derrick Rodgers' organ was removed in order for tests to be done on the kidney.
The private hospital has admitted that the man's kidney was mistakenly discarded following the surgical procedure.
St Augustine's general manager, Dr Augusta Dorning says the facility's protocols for the preservation of histology samples were flouted.
Dorning says the situation as unacceptable, saying they're doing everything they can for the affected patient and his family.
She says this is the first such incident at the facility, and they will ensure this situation is not repeated.
The hospital says while investigations are underway, a urologist will personally be monitoring the patient’s condition and treatment regularly.
