Officer shot, killed pursuing suspect in Umlazi
A police officer has been shot dead while pursuing a wanted murder suspect in Umlazi, south of Durban.
Warrant Officer Jabulani Didi had been patrolling the area with a colleague at about 7pm last night when they received reports that a security guard had been murdered while on duty in U-Section.
Spokesperson Thulani Zwane says the man fired at the police.
''The officers were following up the information that led them to an area near Isipingo Primary School where they spotted the suspect.
''When they approached the suspect it is alleged that the suspect started to shoot towards them, fatally wounding this warrant officer Didi. He died instantly,'' he said.
Police are investigating two counts of murder.
Zwane says police are battling to come to terms with the 54-year-old's death.
''We were very shocked after we learnt that our police officer was shot and killed whilst he was on duty,'' he said.
