Officer shot after asking Ntuzuma driver to step out of his vehicle

A policeman was shot and wounded by the driver of a "suspicious vehicle" he approached in Ntuzuma near KwaMashu yesterday evening.

The officer had been part of a team which had descended on a suspected drug den in the township.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said that officers had parked their marked car on Sicelukuthula Road in G-Section and walked a short distance to the house.
"As the members were returning to the vehicle, they noticed a suspicious Toyota Quantum parked in the middle of the road. The members approached the suspicious vehicle, surrounded it, and asked the driver... [if they could] search it," Zwane said.
"The driver pretended as if he was opening the door, but he was pulling out the firearm and fired two shots towards the members. One member was injured in the left thigh," he added.
A scuffle then ensued and the driver was eventually stripped of his weapon.
"They fought with the suspect and managed to disarm him. He was then arrested for attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearm and will appear in the Ntuzuma Magistrate Court soon," Zwane said.
