Mtubatuba residents compensated for loss of livestock: Ezemvelo KZN

Ezemvelo KZN says it's spent R1.2 million compensating residents of Mtubatuba living near the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve and whose livestock has been killed by the reserve's animals due to an old fence.

Reserve parks manager, Jabulani Ngubane says work to replace the fence has already begun with sections of it complete.

The community of Mvutshini is situated 300 metres away from the reserve and many of their livestock has been snatched by some of the wild animals in the reserve.

Ngubane says while they sympathise with the community, they were warned not to encroach on the reserve.

"When the park was proclaimed there was nobody living adjacent to the park. There was a buffer zone of 5km that was demarcated so people came along and built their homestead closer and closer to the reserve when the reserve was there.

"This was discouraged from the beginning for similar reasons because you must remember there's a lot of leopards in the park and outside," he said.
