KZN rape centre says more still needs to be done to combat rape

A centre that assists the victims of rape and sexual abuse on a daily basis says it has seen great strides in crimes being brought to the frontline - but feels it is not nearly enough.

The Open Door Crisis Centre in Pinetown's Thora Mansfield has been commenting after 3 convicted rapists were imprisoned this week. The men appeared in the Pinetown and Empangeni magistrate's courts and were handed sentences of between 8 and 12 years.
Mansfield feels they should have been given longer sentences. She says it is also alarming that there are no rehab facilities in jail.
"They might go to prison, get out on good behaviour. So they are there a few years and come out because in prison there are no prisons programs for rehabilitation for behavioral change," she said.
"There needs to be programs because South Africa is still regarded as the 'rape capital' of the world," Mansfield said.
