KZN council meetings begin today

Official sittings for the newly elected councils in various KZN districts get underway from today.

The Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs wants to ensure that new councillors are sworn in and take their oaths of office so the process of choosing office bearers and representatives can begin.
Spokesperson Lennox Mabaso says the process will end on August 23.
"In terms of the constitution, government must ensure that within 14 days of the declaration of the election - all sittings have taken place and all municipalities are reconstitutes. So we have to be compliant with the requirements of the constitution by the 23rd.
"All municipalities must have had their sittings and indeed been reconstituted in accordance with the law," he said.
