The National Prosecuting Authority's Natasha Ramkisson Kara says that the amnesty was scrapped due to people becoming complacent knowing that there was a 50% reduction.

Ramkisson-Kara says that the NPA needs to be seen as enforcing the law to increase safety on the roads.

"We cannot align ourselves with these reduction of fines because we see that it's becoming an incentive for people to break the law.

"If there are heavier fines, people become more accountable as it will hit their pocket harder therefore they would be not likely to commit the offence. If a person has a heavy fine, then they could make representation to the prosecutor," she said.

Meanwhile, Newswatch caught up with these Durban residents to hear their thoughts on the change.

This taxi driver wants the decision to be reviewed.
