Foundation says unsure it wants Penny Sparrow's money
The CEO of the Oliver and Adelaide Tambo Foundation says he is not sure if the foundation will accept money from Penny Sparrow.
Yesterday, the Equality Court in Scottburgh found Sparrow guilty of hate speech and ordered that she pay R150 000 to the foundation- whose work includes fighting racism.
Sparrow angered many South Africans after writing a Facebook post in early January in which she made derogatory comments about black beachgoers who had been holidaying in Durban. CEO Mavuso Msimang says he is delighted to hear that she has been found guilty.
"Her racism was always obvious but it is good that it has now been established by the court. I do not know whether this person is sorry. It would be an important thing that people are satisfied that she is going to work on a programme that will stop her from being racist," he said.
Msimang says as a foundation, they have to scrutinise where all possible donations are coming from - suggesting they are not too keen on receiving Sparrow's fine.
"I am not sure that we are interested in even taking the money. I do not know who decided it should come to us and I am not sure the foundation is necessary interested in receiving the money," Msimang said.
