Updated | By Khatija Nxedlana
KZN Education HOD, Nkosinathi Sishi says while the province's matric pass rate has declined by 9%, the number of candidates who passed the 2015 matric exams increased by 1617.

Sishi says 98 761 pupils passed last year's finals compared to the 97 144 who passed in 2014.
While praising the province for making the largest contribution to the country's skills base, Sishi says the more than 63 000 pupils who failed is a concern.

"The results are not good and we are unhappy. Those of us who are in the leadership of education must also take responsibility for it and accept accountability for it.
"The next step is - what are you going to do to ensure that despite the difficulties that we're experiencing - we see continuous and meaningful improvement," he said.
