Transport Minister Dipuo Peters and KZN Premier Willies Mchunu together with the Mayors of iLembe and KwaDukuza have officially opened the Ballito Interchange today.
The project located on the N2 is 50 kilometres north of Durban and will provide access via the Main Road to Ballito.
The construction of the over R180 million project started in 2011 and was completed in Feburary last year.
This project helped unlock the development of a R1 billion shopping mall also to be completed next year.
Speaking after cutting the ribbon on the interchange, Peters says it's an honour to have held the ceremony at the beginning of Mandela Month.
''We are very happy today to be able to open this particular piece of investment that the government of South Africa, supported by the government of the province of KZN and the KwaDukuza Municipality. We all that roads enable the economy to grow and investors to flow in a particular area,'' she said.
Peters will pay her respects at the scene of the two fatal crashes that took the life of uThungulu Deputy Mayor Thulani Mashaba in July last year.
Another 16 people died when their taxi was hit by a train when it landed on railway tracks after crashing down an embankment at the Shakas Head off-ramp a month later.
