#Loadshedding: Preparing for power cuts

During load shedding sessions, the country's power utility, Eskom interrupts supply to selected areas at certain times.

Eskom CEO

The utility says by rotating the energy reducing schedule in a planned way, this ensures that the power grid remains stable.

Stage Two of load shedding is currently underway - and expected to last until 10pm today.

Listen to Newswatch's podcast with the complete area list and times affected, in the greater Durban area.

And here's how to in the short-term prepare for load shedding -

  •  Switch off non-essential appliances and regulate your geyser.
  •  Keep a copy of the load shedding schedule where you can see it - pinned near your work desk or on your fridge at home.
  • Back up your documents when working on a computer - and if not connected to a generator.
  • Ensure your cellphone, and similar devices are fully charged.
  • If at home during the load shedding two-hour period, or possibly overnight, keep your refrigerator closed to keep temperatures constant.
  • Keep a battery powered torch and candle - which can be readily available as sources of light.

Meanwhile, Stage One load shedding will again be implemented this weekend. During this festive season, there's a possibility that supply may be once again interrupted.

The utility's Dikatso Mothae has told Newswatch this is due to a number of their power generating units are not fully operational.
