The countdown to Black Friday has begun. There are just a few more nights to go until we can shop until we drop.

While Black Friday is the biggest shopping day of the year, it can also be a day where many of us find ourselves making costly mistakes.

Here are the five common mistakes you should avoid making this Black Friday.

Shopping for the sake of shopping

Just because everyone is shopping and it is Black Friday doesn’t mean you must also spend money - unless there is an item you need and can afford.

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you went to the mall to get an item or two, but came back with a car full of stuff?

This is because it is very hard to resist temptation.

Unless there are things that you need to buy, there is no need to head to the shops, especially if you have no budget available.

Going to the mall might tempt you and you find yourself coming back home with a lot of items you didn't really plan to buy.

Going over your budget

Have a budget and stick to it! The last thing you want is to go into debt because of Black Friday or find yourself with bounced debit orders because you went over budget with your Black Friday shopping.

Buying something you don’t need because it is cheap

Before buying something, ask yourself if you really need it, or are you buying it just because it is cheap.

Some of the stuff we buy on sale ends up just taking up space in our homes or being unused because we didn't really need it.

Not comparing prices

Many stores will be running specials. Don’t just jump at the first price you see. You can save yourself lots of money by comparing prices that different stores offer.

Give yourself enough time to shop around and compare prices, before purchasing an item.

Not checking return policies

When it comes to return policies, stores differ.

Some stores don't do refunds, they only allow for an exchange.

Be sure that you understand their return policies.

Also ensure that the item comes with a guarantee.
