#BigFavour gives Esethu the gift of education

How often do we take sitting in front of a computer for granted, yet someone, somewhere out there yearns to be in an arm's length of one? This week, the Big Favour will make you all appreciate the little things in life.

Esethu

Listen to this incredible story in the podcast below, then read the blog:

Jeanie wrote to the Big Favour to tell us about Esethu.

Twenty-two-year-old Esethu's dreams of entering the world of computers were crushed one Sunday afternoon before his matric exams in 2016.

He had gone to extra lessons with a group of friends when on his way home, he was struck by a hit-and-run driver, sending him flying off the road and into a ditch.

For two days, his mother was beside herself wondering what had happened to her boy, as no one knew where he was. Eventually, a doctor at the hospital where he had been admitted found his mother's number on Esethu's cell phone and called her.

His arm was badly injured and there was some talk of amputation. Doctors thankfully managed to save it. However, there is nerve damage and he still cannot use his left arm. He has since learned to use his other arm, but spent an entire year sitting at home as he healed from his various injuries.

Esethu cannot hold a pen or return to school to write the normal matric exams.

In the meantime, his mother has found a college in Verulam where he can submit his assessment tasks and write his exams using a computer. Unfortunately, the fees are in the region of R14,000 for the year, plus another R1,000 for materials and books.

Esethu’s mother, Notiswa, works as a domestic worker four days a week and is desperately trying to scrape together enough money to give her son a future. His dad passed away when he was 15, so she has no other support.
