Liquor Council plans to raise funds for struggling taverns
With their sustained calls for the suspension of alcohol sales to be lifted, the National Liquor Traders Council says the sector will have to dig deep into its pockets to help struggling tavern owners.
The council plans to raise R100 million to assist around 34 500 taverns with food parcels and other supplies over the next two to three months.
Spokesperson, Lucky Ntimane says these establishments contribute billions annually to the country's economy - adding the ban has threatened owners and their employees' livelihoods.

He says they're also asking for help from liquor manufacturers and other industry partners.
"The R100 million is actually aimed at ensuring that they've got food.
"We procure food parcels for them, and we're also sticking to raise almost R690 million that will enable us to pay R20 000 each for the tavern, so this will be once off booked. Combined we're looking at raising R800 million," says Ntimane.
