Grovida: Supplying Gardening Solutions Across KwaZulu-Natal

What began as a modest garden supply business in Durban in 1980 has developed into a trusted name in horticulture across KwaZulu-Natal. Grovida was established by Vincent Lourenco Snr out of a passion for gardening and a desire to provide reliable, quality products to both home gardeners and the wider agricultural sector. In its early days, the business offered just three items—compost, potting soil and kraal manure.

Today, Grovida is led by the second generation of the Lourenco family. Vincent Lourenco and his spouse, Jenny Lourenco, manage the business together, combining strategic direction with hands-on operational experience. Under their leadership, Grovida has expanded into both retail and wholesale operations and has recently launched an online sales platform.

The company now operates from two locations: a retail store in Umgeni Park and a wholesale facility in Briardene. Grovida employs 26 staff, many of whom have been with the business for a number of years, contributing to the consistency of service that customers have come to expect.

A Practical Approach to Gardening

Grovida supplies a wide range of gardening and pest control products to co-operatives, nurseries, hardware stores, schools, sports clubs, and venues such as Hollywoodbets Kings Park and Kingsmead Stadium. Deliveries are managed in-house through the company’s own fleet of vehicles, ensuring efficient distribution throughout the province.

The product range has expanded to include Grovida-branded insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, and both granular and organic fertilisers. The business also imports a selection of garden tools, millet, sprayers, coir and pet products. Recent additions include hydroponics and birding supplies, broadening the offering for both domestic and commercial use.

In 2010, Vincent Lourenco introduced a policy that all retail staff must be qualified horticulturists. This has allowed the business to offer personalised advice and guidance based on technical knowledge, something that sets it apart from larger national retailers.

Industry Recognition and Longstanding Memberships

Grovida has been a member of the South African Nursery Association (SANA) since 1982. Since 2010, it has received the Allied Supplier of the Year award for KwaZulu-Natal on seven occasions, recognition from within the industry for the company’s consistent service and long-standing client relationships.

The business continues to be supported by experienced teams on both the retail and wholesale sides. The retail team is led by Andrew Knight, while Ulanda Abraham oversees the wholesale division—both contributing to Grovida’s ability to meet customer needs efficiently.

Looking Ahead

The introduction of Grovida’s online platform reflects the company’s ongoing efforts to remain accessible and relevant in an evolving market. Whether supplying fertiliser to a sports facility or assisting a first-time gardener, Grovida continues to focus on practical solutions and sound horticultural advice.

With more than four decades of experience, Grovida remains a reliable supplier of gardening products and expertise across KwaZulu-Natal, helping individuals and institutions maintain healthy gardens and green spaces.
