A Business Born from Adversity
BTL Engineering & Project Management, a KwaZulu-Natal-based business founded and headed up by Andrew Cunningham, has grown from modest beginnings into a specialist in structural steel fabrication and installations. The company’s work underpins essential infrastructure, from bridges and industrial facilities to commercial buildings across the province.
The business was founded in 2011, born out of challenge and determination. Following a retrenchment, Andrew started BTL as a one-man operation in less than 10 m² of borrowed workspace. What could have been a setback became an opportunity to create something lasting. Over the years, that small workshop has evolved into a fully equipped 500 m² facility in Pinetown, housing a skilled team and a range of specialised machinery.
Engineering in the Blood
Engineering is part of Andrew’s heritage. Inspired by parents who both worked in the field, he developed an in-depth understanding of how machinery, equipment and structures must work in harmony. This knowledge, combined with a commitment to remaining in South Africa and investing in local talent, has shaped the business into what it is today.
BTL has implemented a hands-on training programme to equip staff with fabrication and engineering skills from the ground up, contributing to the development of skilled workers in the industry and helping address the shortage of qualified artisans.
Creating Structures and Supporting Communities
Among BTL’s portfolio is a well-known project at uShaka Marine World, where the company designed and installed the bridges over the lazy river and near the shipwreck aquarium.
While high-profile projects have raised BTL’s visibility, the business has remained committed to its roots. Where possible, the company sources materials locally and collaborates with other SMMEs, building a reliable network of business support within the community.

A Vision for the Future
As BTL looks ahead, the company is focused on advancing its fabrication and design capabilities. Plans are underway to invest in CNC machinery and computer-aided design systems to enhance precision and efficiency.
With these developments, BTL Engineering & Project Management aims to expand its services within South Africa and into neighbouring African markets, continuing its steady growth while maintaining its focus on local development and practical engineering solutions.
