Akili Timber: A Local Business with Deep Roots in Richmond
Akili Timber, a sawmill based in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands town of Richmond, is steadily building a name for itself in South Africa’s timber industry. The business processes raw logs into planks, poles, and custom timber products, serving clients across various sectors. Located just one hour from Durban Harbour, Akili Timber is well placed to deliver quick turnaround times and reliable service to its growing customer base.
The business was originally acquired by the late husband of Pindiwe Filtane. Following his passing, Pindiwe took over the management of the company and has continued to guide its growth with focus and determination. Today, Akili Timber is 100% owned and managed by her — a clear example of strong local leadership in the manufacturing sector.
From the outset, Pindiwe recognised the potential to create opportunities not only within the business but also in the surrounding community. The company currently employs 39 people from Richmond and the neighbouring areas. In addition to providing formal employment, Akili Timber works with over ten local eucalyptus and pine growers who supply the sawmill with logs, helping to build and sustain a rural supply network.
Skilled Craftsmanship and a Commitment to Quality
Akili Timber is especially known for manufacturing timber cradles used in the shipping industry, as well as producing a variety of custom timber components. The team’s ability to adapt quickly to specific customer requirements has become one of its key strengths. With a firm understanding of design specifications and a hands-on approach, the staff are able to deliver tailored solutions across projects of different sizes.
One recent delivery to a long-standing client highlighted the team’s attention to detail and reliability. Logs were carefully selected and processed to meet every requirement, reflecting the company’s practical approach and consistent output.

Looking Ahead
Akili Timber processes approximately 5,000 tonnes of timber each year, with plans to increase this capacity. The company is working towards expanding into a more modern, high-tech facility, which will not only improve efficiency but also introduce new service divisions. As part of this transition, there is a strong focus on upskilling the existing workforce to support more advanced operations.
While the business continues to explore new partnerships and markets, its roots remain firmly in Richmond. Akili Timber’s role in the region includes job creation, supplier development, and skills training in a sector with long-term growth potential.
Supporting Local Growth
For the Richmond community, Akili Timber is more than a timber business — it’s a consistent contributor to local employment and trade. By working with small-scale farmers, employing local residents, and focusing on sustainable development, the company continues to play a meaningful part in the area’s economy.
Under the leadership of Pindiwe Filtane, Akili Timber is shaping a path forward — one that supports local participation while steadily building for the future.
