Firefighters are dousing a blaze at the New England Road Landfill in Pietermaritzburg that has left the city under a thick cloud of smoke.

The fire, which has been burning since last night, has affected the CBD and surrounding areas.
The uMsunduzi Municipality says strong winds and thick smoke made it too difficult to extinguish the fire last night.
The municipality said in a statement that it expects the complete dowsing of the fire to take about three days. The cause of the blaze is still unknown.
