Zuma pays R7.8-million for non-security upgrades in Nkandla

Both the National Treasury and The Presidency have confirmed that President Jacob Zuma has paid back close to R8-million for non-security upgrades to his private home in Nkandla in northern KZN.

The non-security features include - the visitors centre, amphitheatre, cattle kraal, chicken run and swimming pool.

Yolisa Tyantsi, who's the Acting spokesperson for the Treasury, has confirmed the payment.

The department had recommended that Zuma pay back over R7.8-million after the Constitutional Court found that Zuma violated his duties by failing to implement the findings of the Public Protector that he pay back a portion of the money.

According to the Presidency, the President raised the amount through a home loan obtained from VBS Mutual Bank.

The Presidency has issued a statement - see below.

President Zuma has complied with the Constitutional Court Order

President Zuma has paid over the amount of R7 814 155.00 to the South African Reserve Bank as ordered by the Constitutional Court of South Africa in respect of his private homestead at Nkandla.

The President raised the amount through a home loan obtained from VBS Mutual Bank  on its standard terms, one of the few financial institutions which offer home loans in respect of land owned by traditional authorities.

News that Zuma has finally paid back the money has been met with mixed reactions on social media:
