Consumers called on to safeguard banking details
Updated | By Zongile Mthimkhulu
Consumers have been defrauded by more than half a million rands since the beginning of the year.

This is according to the South African Banking Risk Information Centre. The centre's Kalyani Pillay says criminals are now targeting consumers who have lost their debit cards to make online purchases that do not require the cardholder’s PIN.
Pillay urges bank customers to be vigilant when banking online and when their card details have been compromised.
She says one of the ways to do this is to register for 3D secure, on their bank's websites.
"An authentication code will be called for when you are doing a transaction and that code will be sent to a device of your choice" she said.
"So if perpetrators have already stolen your banking information and want to do online purchases using your card they will not be able to complete the transaction", Pillay said.
