International Nurses Day celebrates the contribution that nurses make to society around the world.

The date has a very strong significance, being the birthday of perhaps the world’s most famous nurse - Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern-day nursing.

Of all the world’s professions, this is perhaps one of the most unique vocations with a diverse and interesting skill set. While clinical skills are imperative, Life skills: Care; Compassion; Empathy, and Resilience are much-needed tools for every nurse!

To commemorate the day, Mags caught up with two remarkable people in the industry.

Sr Henisha Sewdan has been in the field for over 19 years and has a varied skill set in Emergency Medicine. Currently she is the nursing head of the Emergency Department at Lenmed Ethekwini Hospital and Heart Centre, and is the preferred Helicopter Emergency Medical Services Specialist.

Mr Calvin Sanele Simelane, on the other hand, has been in the medical field for the past 5 years.. He is employed at Lenmed Ethekwini Hospital and Heart Centre as an enrolled nurse.

In the interview, they talk about nursing as a career, what keeps them passionate, how to go about entering the field, and some of the challenges they face.

The East Coast Drive team would like to salute the nurses around the world for their dedication to the cause, and for their passion.
