#AskMags: Indian man asked to pay lobola for his girlfriend

This KZN listener was stuck in a predicament and decided to #AskMags for a bit of advice on his 'lobola' situation.
I recently received a voice note from a very concerned KZN listener. I guess it's another job for #AskMags. I've heard your request and I'm here to share my advice.

An Indian man sent me a voice note about a predicament that he's currently in. He is madly in love with a black girl and clearly wants to take things to the next level.
According to Makamba Online, in the Zulu culture, lobola is known as the price of the bride, which is traditionally paid in cattle.The lobola ceremony is important as it is both a spiritual affair and involves the coming together of the two families.

The predicament he's experiencing is that he feels that the amount he has to pay is simply ridiculous and that he shouldn't be subjected to paying the price.

Personally, I believe that he should not be treated any differently and should pay the amount required for his bride-to-be. He should respect her traditions and pay what's expected of him.
