The gift of mobility

The gift of mobility

Drive producer Rory was at the Department of Home Affairs in Pinetown last month where he met an elderly couple with the husband really, really struggling to walk. Rory approached them. A month later, we surprised them at home.

We arrived at the modest block of flats in Mariannhill on a cold and fresh morning.

The couple, Kayser and Jannie, were under the impression they were receiving a visit from Rory 'to discuss how we could help.'

With the generous help of Arthur Gray from Rotary in Richards Bay, we were able to donate not just any wheelchair, but a custom fitted one for maximum comfort.

Kayser told us how far they need to struggle along every week to meet their transport to the clinic, with Jannie hobbling along with a rickety old walking stick.

Jannie suffered a stroke a while ago. He sometimes forgets he is no longer working, making it a nightmare for Kayser to keep potentially dangerous items such as the kettle out of his reach in the mornings.

But, as Kayser says, their biggest problem was mobility. Thanks to Arthur from Rotary in Richards Bay, this is no longer the case.
