Mum's the best
Updated | By tanstan fourie

We’re commemorating the month dedicated to all the women in our lives. Our mums, our sisters, our wives and girlfriends play a big role in shaping the way we view the world and how we operate in it.
For me, the most influential woman in my life has to be my mum. “Oh, I knew she was going to go there,” I hear you say but with a mum like mine, how can I not, “go there?”
My mother has been a working mum from the day I was born. In fact, my brother and I would not have been able to study after school had it not been for my mum. She always planned ahead and thought about our future when we paid very little or no attention to it.
She can be firm and yet so gentle at the same time. I remember the day they brought my brother home from the hospital. I was 4-years-old at the time. I had no idea he was a real, living person. In my mind, I thought my parents had brought home a new doll for me to play with. So I did what any young, excited girl would do. I took the ‘doll’ out of the cot and danced around the house with the angelic thing. It was only when our domestic reported my reckless behaviour to my mum did she come to my brother’s rescue. He was placed gently back into his cot. I was dealt with, firmly.
As I child, I looked up to this person who knew it all and did it all. To me, my mum was invincible. If there was a cake sale in school the next day, I took the best apple sponge cake squares ever known to man. If I had a stain on my school dress, she knew how to make it disappear. My mum also had a love for the Afrikaans language. This came in handy during essay writing.
As I grew up, I realised this extraordinary human being was to become my best friend. My mum is such a gracious woman, always kind, patient and understanding. Even when she’s having a bad day, she seems to be able to put that aside to put us first.
I’m so grateful to the Lord that I have a mum as cool as her. She’s really inspired me to be the best I can be not just for myself but for my husband and child (one day)
