Various police units descended on Plessislaer in Pietermaritzburg on Friday after a mass shooting.

KwaZulu-Natal SAPS spokesperson Jay Naicker says seven women and three men were gunned down in the early hours of Friday morning.
"Police were informed of gunshots emanating from Unit 14 in Imbali. When they attended to the scene, they found that ten members of one family were shot and fatally wounded in one of the homes.
"It's believed that two unknown gunmen entered the home and opened fire on the family members."

Meanwhile, Msunduzi Mayor Mzimkhulu Thebolla says the community's been left shaken.
He says some people are very traumatised, which is why they have dispatched a team of counsellors to the area.
Thebolla says violent crime is a major concern.

He's going to raise the issue with the Police Minister.
"More needs to be done to capacitate that police station. That is what we will raise with him because we know when it was built, it was for a certain number of people, but the area now has grown.
"So they [police] are working in a bigger area with more people, somehow either they restructure the way they are working or they capacitate this police station."
