Two dead in Phoenix fire caused by ‘exploding cell phone’

Police have opened an inquest docket after two people were killed in a fire believed to have been caused by a cell phone that exploded in Phoenix, north of Durban.

The victims are believed to be a brother and sister.
KZN VIP Ambulance Service's Gareth Naidoo says they responded to the fire at their home on Sunday.
He says it caused extensive damage to the house.

"KZN VIP received multiple distress calls from residents in the area requesting assistance. It was established that two people were entrapped in the house, which was engulfed in flames.
"It is believed that the fire started in the lounge area, where a sofa caught light and a phone was charging on the sofa. The male and female were sadly deceased."
