heavy industry can do more to reduce its impact on the environment.

SDCEA says, even though laws and measures are put in place to restrict the amount of pollution entering the natural environment, some companies fail to play their role.
The organisation embarked on a ‘toxic tour’ in what it says are pollution hotspot areas south of Durban yesterday.
They visited areas such as Merebank, Wentworth, the Bluff, Clairwood and Jacobs.
SDCEA says industrial waste in the city’s back of port area affects air and water quality for local communities and has a direct impact on people’s health.
The alliance’s Bongani Mthembu they are collecting data so that those responsible for the pollution can be held to account.
“Those communities are directly affected by the [heavy industry] in the area.”
